1The pencil is one of the simplest tools in your pencil case, but it has an interesting history. It all began in England in the 1500s, when people found a large amount of a soft black in the ground. They thought it was , a heavy grey metal, so they called it "black ". In fact, it was graphite.
2Graphite left dark marks on paper, but it was soft and broke easily, and it made people's hands dirty. At first, people pieces of it in string. Later, they put it inside thin pieces of wood, which made it much easier to hold.
