Should We Bring Back the Mammoth?

1In 2003, a team of Spanish and French scientists achieved something that had never been done before. Using cells taken from the last known female of a wild goat called the bucardo, or Pyrenean ibex, they produced a living clone. The newborn kid survived for only a few minutes, but for that brief moment an extinct animal had returned. Since then, advances in genetic technology have turned what once sounded like science fiction into a serious research goal. The question is no longer only whether we can bring vanished species back, but whether we should.

2Supporters of de-extinction offer several persuasive arguments. Many species disappeared because of human activity, through hunting, the destruction of habitats or the introduction of predators. Restoring them, they argue, would be a way of repairing some of the damage our ancestors caused. Others point to ecological benefits. Some extinct animals played important roles in their environments, spreading seeds, shaping forests or grazing grasslands, and their return might help damaged ecosystems recover. Finally, the research itself could produce valuable tools for protecting endangered species that are still alive today.

3Critics, however, raise concerns that are difficult to dismiss. The most practical one is cost. Reviving a single species would demand enormous sums of money and years of work, resources that could instead be used to protect the habitats of thousands of threatened animals. There is also the problem of where a revived species would live. The world a mammoth once knew has changed dramatically, and an animal released into an unfamiliar landscape might struggle to survive or might harm the plants and animals that live there now.

4A deeper worry concerns our attitude towards nature. If extinction can be reversed, some fear that people will stop taking it seriously. Why spend effort saving a rare frog if scientists can simply recreate it later? This argument suggests that de-extinction could create a dangerous sense of comfort, encouraging the very carelessness that caused so many losses in the first place. It is also worth remembering that a 'revived' mammoth would not truly be a mammoth. It would most likely be an elephant whose genes had been edited to give it mammoth-like features, such as thick hair and a layer of fat to survive the cold.

5Animal welfare adds another layer to the debate. The first animals produced by any new technique are likely to suffer health problems, as the short life of the cloned bucardo showed. Moreover, many extinct species were social creatures that learned how to behave from others of their kind. A lone animal, raised in a laboratory with no parents to teach it, might lead a confused and lonely life.

6In my view, de-extinction should be treated as a tool rather than a solution. The research deserves support when it helps us understand genetics and protect animals that are still with us. But it must never become an excuse to neglect the living. The most effective way to deal with extinction remains the simplest: preventing it from happening at all.
