Can a Machine Be a Teacher?

1For as long as schools have existed, educators have known that one of the most effective ways to learn is with a personal tutor. A good tutor notices exactly where a student is confused, explains the idea again in a different way and moves on only when the student is ready. The problem has always been cost: few families can afford private lessons, and no school can provide a tutor for every child. Now, artificial intelligence promises to change that, and some enthusiasts even predict that AI tutors will one day make human teachers unnecessary.

2The case for AI tutors is genuinely strong. They are available at any hour, they never lose patience, and they can adapt to each learner's pace. A student who is too shy to ask a question in front of thirty classmates may happily ask a computer the same question five times. For students in remote areas, or in schools where qualified teachers are scarce, such tools could open doors that were previously closed.

3Yet the technology has real weaknesses. AI systems can produce answers that sound confident but are simply wrong, and a student who is still learning a subject may be unable to tell the difference. There is also a risk that learners will use these tools to avoid thinking rather than to support it, asking for finished answers instead of working through problems themselves. A tutor that does the work for you is not much of a tutor at all.

4More importantly, teaching involves far more than delivering information. A teacher notices when a usually cheerful pupil is withdrawn, encourages a student who has stopped believing in herself, and turns a group of individuals into a class that learns together. Schools also teach children how to cooperate, disagree respectfully and belong to a community. These are deeply human tasks, and it is hard to imagine a machine performing them convincingly.

5So, can AI tutors replace teachers? In my opinion, the question is framed in the wrong way. The more useful question is how the two can work together. Imagine a classroom in which an AI tutor helps each student practise basic skills at their own level, while the teacher, freed from some routine tasks, spends more time on discussion, creativity and individual support. In such a partnership, technology would strengthen the human relationship at the heart of education rather than replace it.

6Achieving this balance will not happen automatically. Schools will need to teach students how to use AI tools wisely, checking answers and asking questions rather than copying. Teachers will need training and time to adapt. But if these conditions are met, the arrival of AI in education may turn out to be less a threat to teachers than a valuable new assistant.
